Luscious, powdery, hinted with citrus, and pairs perfectly with freshly pulled espresso.
Ingredients:
1/3 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 cup milk
1 1/2 tsp. orange zest
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
6 Tbsp. melted margarine
Method:
Cream shortening, sugar and egg.
Combine flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg and add to creamed mixture alternatively with milk.
Beat until creamy and smooth.
Fold in 1 tsp. of the orange zest.
Portion the mixture into 12 well-greased muffin cups. Bake at 350 degrees F for twenty minutes or until just golden brown. While waiting for puffs to bake, place powdered sugar in small bowl and add the remaining 1/2 tsp. orange zest. Mix well.
Allow five minutes for French Puffs to cool once out of the oven. While puffs are still warm, roll in melted margarine and powdered sugar.
Perfection. :)
